Science

Our science learning this half term is all about living things and their habitats. We found about that a habitat is a place or area which gives the plants and animals that live there everything that they need to survive. We found out that there are lots of different habitats in the United Kingdom; beaches, rivers, woodland, meadows, and even one which we have in our own school grounds, a pond! We wanted to investigate to find out exactly which plants and animals live in our school habitat. To do this we used equipment to safely collect samples from our pond. We added these samples to trays and used magnifying glasses to examine what we found in detail. We recorded our findings using sketching, and then used scientific spotters guides to name and identify what we had found.

We identified a wide variety of plants such as duckweed, yellow water lilies, water dock and crowfoot. We also found many animals in our pond habitat, such as leeches, water snails, water boatman, water spiders, dragonfly larvae and many, many newts at different stages of their lifecycle.  We loved working scientifically to investigate and would love to return to our pond habitat again.
