Scott Autumn 2021

Scott Class Autumn 2021 Overview

Our Class Name

Scott class first looked at some photos of the person who our class is named after. We asked enquiring questions and used evidence of what we could see to make some predictions about this person. We noticed that all of the photographs were in black and white, which made us think that this was a person from the past. We also saw that one photograph was of a statue, making us think that this person was well known and perhaps important.

The photographs were all of the explorer Robert Falcon Scott, also known as Scott of the Antarctic. We found out more, using photographs, maps, text and a video to build our knowledge of Scott and his amazing achievements. We finished by reflecting on Scott, thinking about why he was chosen as our class name. We made a list of words that we would use to describe him, words that we ourselves would also like to be. We all agreed that Scott was a great choice for our class name!

Black History Month

In Scott class this term we have completed lots of history learning about toys from the past and have been learning how to be historians. And so, we were very interested to find out that all around the world, this month is known as black history month. In our school assembly we found out about black history month, why it is important to think about the achievements of everyone, and why some groups have not always been fairly treated.

Back in class we found out about the life and achievements of Mae Jemison, the first African-American women to ever go into space. As we found out about her life, it became clear that even when people told her she couldn’t do something because of what she looked like, she didn’t listen, and kept working hard to meet her goals. We were inspired by her story and set our own goals and dreams for the future, drawing and writing about them in shooting stars. No matter who we are, we can achieve if we believe and work hard. You can see from our stars that we have some very ambitious goals in Scott class. Some include being an artist, teacher, zookeeper, explorer, an Olympic diver, a palaeontologist, a tank driver, playing football for Aston Villa and even to climb Mount Everest.

Tiverton Museum Trip

As part of our history learning, we visited Tiverton museum to view and handle lots of toys from the past. We could use our science learning to share what materials different toys were made from, and could also use what we had learned in class to think about whether the toys were from our grandparent’s childhood, our parent’s childhood, or maybe even older. We were able to use our learning power of being curious cats to ask lots of enquiring questions about the artefacts that we saw.

We really enjoyed playing with toys from the Victorian era and were surprised at just how fun some of the games were. We also had a go at making our own peg dolls, just as many children from the Victorian age would have done too. The trip was a great opportunity to apply what we had learned about toys so far, and to learn even more!

RE Focus – Christmas

Our R.E focus question this month has been, why do Christians celebrate Christmas? We found out all about the story of Christmas that Christians believe, which comes from the Bible. We then told this Christmas story in a nativity, which was performed to the whole school, and to our grown-ups, during 3 different performances. We each had a part to play and had to work hard to learn and remember our lines, as well as the words and actions to lots of songs. We really enjoyed performing and had a great time!
