The Duchy School
Modern Foreign Languages
At The Duchy School we provide rich and deep learning experiences that embrace and promote our core values. Learning a Modern Foreign Language enables children to understand and respect other cultures. It also increases a child’s understanding of their own language, reinforcing fluency and understanding of grammar, syntax, sentence structure and verbal precision.
Throughout KS2, children learn to speak French with increasing confidence and fluency. They find ways of communicating what they want to say through discussion and by asking questions. Children respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources in order to promote accuracy of pronunciation and intonation. Children write at varying length for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt.
This learning develops an interest in the culture and values of other nations and promotes a curiosity in our wider global community. Our MFL teaching is informed by the National Curriculum and the skills expressed in areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Cultural Understanding.
