King Autumn 2021

King Class Autumn 2021 Overview

Our Class Name

Our class is named after Mary Elizabeth King who is a British equestrian who competes in eventing. She has represented Great Britain at six Olympics from 1992 to 2012, winning team silver in 2004 and 2012, and team bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, she won team gold in 1994 and 2010, and team silver in 2006. Mary grew up near Salcombe Regis in Devon.

We found out more about her life and her achievements. We also enjoyed watching some films of her competing in dressage, showjumping and cross-country. We hadn’t realised how high some of the fences are that the horses and their riders have to jump over! We also thought about some of the questions that we would like to ask Mary King if we were able to meet her.

Racing to School

On Wednesday 10th November, Year 6 visited Exeter Racecourse on a race day to take part in a Maths event led by ‘Racing to School’. Children tool part in a range of mathematical challenges and activities including estimating and measuring perimeter, converting between different units of measurement and calculating different averages and weights. Children also learnt about the history of racing and enjoyed watching some actual races in the afternoon. We even got to go into the parade ring and present one of the winners with their trophy!

Year 6 Dartmoor Residential

Monday

We’ve had a fantastic afternoon on the Moor at Hound Tour where all the children have been weasling and scrambling as well as climbing. We needed to take shelter from a few showers and were pleased when the sun decided to shine so that we could finish the day with some gorgeous weather. After pizza for tea, the children have been taking part in a team ‘tower building’ challenge. They are definitely looking like they might be ready for bed!

Tuesday

The weather didn’t stop us at The River Dart Country Park today! We still had a fantastic time and even had the whole park completely to ourselves. The children have written postcards this evening which will be posted tomorrow – they may make it home before the children!

They’re also taking part in a fashion show this evening where the children are creating their own outfit using a range of interesting materials.

Wednesday

All of the children made us incredibly proud today with everyone adventuring underground and challenging themselves. They excelled at archery and a few bullseyes were scored. We’ve also been on a night walk on the moor making up our own names for different constellations before enjoying a campfire and toasted marsh mallows.

Thursday

All of our Year 6 children have shown fantastic determination and resilience today with a rather wet hike on the moor and some adventures on the way. They’re now all getting ready for their disco and awards ceremony after a tasty BBQ tea. Tomorrow, we’re looking forward to a morning of orienteering before loading up the coach and heading home.
