The Duchy School
Year 6 Dartmoor Residential – September 2024
Monday 23rd September
We arrived safely at the Dartmoor Training Centre and the children spent some time orienteering within the grounds and taking part in a range of team activities. They then took part in a range of bushcraft activities including shelter building. This evening, children have had the opportunity to plan a range of ‘hiding’ games outside as well as some team challenges inside. The weather has been kind to us and so far we have all stayed dry! We are all looking forward to a day of weasling, scrambling and climbing tomorrow.
Tuesday 24th September
After a very quiet night with all children sleeping soundly, we have had a fantastic day of weasling, scrambling and climbing. The weather has been kind to us again and all of the children have shown excellent tenacity challenging themselves to squeeze through some very small holes and climb some rather high rocks! We are now looking forward to a night walk and a campfire this evening.
We are experiencing difficulties here with the wifi and aren’t currently able to upload more than one photo at a time (one photo is taking about six hours). We will continue to persevere.
Wednesday 25th September
Although we had a wet start to the day, the children have still had a fantastic day orienteering and mountain biking. We had some of the highest scores that we have ever had in orienteering and the weather brightened up this afternoon so that coats could come off and we even caught a glimpse of the sun. On our return to the centre, the children were excited to see Mr Roberts and have enjoyed showing him the centre and the dens that they built on Monday. They are now preparing for their evening activity of a fashion show! The children will be creating their own super hero costumes and thinking up the special special power that this character could possess.
Thursday 26th September
Children have enjoyed caving and archery today. They showed amazing tenacity caving tackling some tricky challenges and tight spaces. There will be ALOT of muddy clothes returning home with the children! In archery, children competed in a number of different challenges and a few bullseyes were scored. They are now getting ready for tonight’s disco and awards ceremony.
