Geography

What is the geography of where I live? This question has led us to research our own homes using postcodes on Google maps as well as identifying human and physical geography. We were fortunate that the rain stopped for our walk around Bradninch. The children were able to apply our key words to real life contexts and enjoyed talking about their experiences within the town. When comparing old maps of Bradninch to new maps the children have said they want the government to stop building too many new houses because we need green spaces for wildlife. I am thrilled that children are making links between their learning and using science knowledge to identify how land changes affect animals and their habitats. I think we have some future geographers and scientists in the class! Check out some photos here!

Maths

In maths this half term we have started to learn our 2, 5 and 10 timetables. We have found naturally occurring patterns in our everyday lives and linked them to a multiplication number sentence. For example, the holes in a washing basket showing two rows of 5 could be 5+5=10 or 2×5=10. We found out that learning our timetables can be easy by using repeated addition and our skip counting. We have even started learning some songs to help us too!

Creative Unicorn Learning Power

During this term, the children have explored the Creative Unicorn learning power. The children started the term by constructing collages of self-portraits. Once the children completed their master pieces, they evaluated what went well and identified an area that they would like to improve on. Since then, the children have created detailed plans on how to construct a 3D house using different materials and are in the process of making the constructions.

World Book Day

We love celebrating books in Andrews class! The children enjoyed dressing up to celebrate World Book Day and take on the role of their favourite character. The children have been taking books home from the school library and their phonics groups as well as having the opportunity to read books from Miss Boston’s Purple Book Box. We have shared lots of laughter while reading books at the end of the day, especially Dr Suess’ silly rhyming books!

Science Week

What happens to our teeth after we drink a fizzy drink and don’t brush our teeth?

During science week the children explored this question and make prediction on what they thought would happen. We then carried out an experiment using hard boiled eggs and different fizzy drinks. We left the eggs in the fizzy drinks overnight. We found out that your teeth would change colour, smell funny, and feel rough. Some of the eggs were able to return to their normal colour however we noticed that some eggs were stained with a spotty pattern.

We promised that we would brush our teeth before bed and especially hard if we have had a fizzy drink!
