Acorn Autumn 2021 Term Overview

Our Class Name

In Foundation we have been learning about our class name. We are named after our school motto ‘Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.’ As a class we talked about how acorns grow on oak trees and contain the seed that can grow new oak trees. We thought about how when we come to school we are like the little acorns and as we go through school and grow, we will be getting bigger like the new oak trees. We had lots of fun painting acorns choosing to either use natural colours or more abstract pop art colours. We also enjoyed spending time outside looking for acorns under our own school oak tree.

Pizza Making

The children in Acorn class have been enjoying their school lunches cooked by Jen and Sophie in the Kitchen, and especially enjoyed the delicious pizzas. The children were very keen to know how pizzas were made, so we decided to run a mini topic and learn how to make them and talk about where some of the ingredients came from. One of those was the flour used to make the pizza base. Children listened to the story of the Little Red hen and looked at a wheat sheaf and discovered where the flour was found. 

The Role-play pizza hut has been a very busy area the past two weeks as well!

Black History Month

As part of Black History month, children in Acorn class learned a little bit about the life of Harriet Tubman. Harriet was a slave from the age of six and didn’t attend school. As she grew up, she helped many people escape the life of slavery. The children asked lots of sensible questions about her life and we had a lovely chat about our different skin colours and how we should treat each other. It was important not to give children the idea that the lives of black and other people of colour are only about struggle, so we will also make time to teach the children through stories about the beautiful lives of children from all around the world.
